Princess Suseri and O-kuni-nushi
April 8, 2014
Sequel to the last article.
She said.
Okuninushi's brothers to killed him in revenge and jealousy.
His brothers told him to catch a wild boar that would run down the mountain.
Then they heated a huge rock that looked like a boar, and when it was red-hot, rolled it down the mountain to Okuninushi.
He dutifully caught it, and was burned to death."
I heaved sigh.
I don't understand if he was a he sucker or silly.
She continued the story.
His mother asked the kamis to bring her son back to life and they did so.
On another occasion, the bad brothers split a tree down the middle, put Okuninushi in the split, and let it close on him.
Of course, he was crushed to death.
Again, his mother asked the gods to help her, and they brought him back to life once more."
I made bitter smile.
" He didn't know how to doubtfully?( ̄◇ ̄;)"
She answered.
" I think that he had an amiable disposition. So he was revived."
" I see. "
She told continued O-kuni-nushi's story.
" Then O-kuni-nushi visited Nenokuni where Susanoo lived.
When princess Suseri, daughter of Susano, came out of the palace, she exchanged glances with O-kuni-nushi and, empathizing with him, she married him, then returned to the palace and said to her father,
'A very respectable kami came here.(It was said O-kuni-nushi is one of the kami) '
Susano came out of his palace to meet him.
He instantly invited him into the palace and had him sleep in a celler occupied by a snake.
O-kuni-nushi's wife Suseri gave her husband a light cloth with which to keep the snake at bay and said to him,
' If the snake tries to eat you, wave the cloth three times and drive it away. '
When he did as he was told, the snake naturally calmed down and so he could sleep in peace and leave the cellar safely.
The following night Susanoo put him in another cellar where centipedes and bees lived.
Once again Suseri gave her husband a light cloth to drive them away and told him to act as he had done before.
Consequently he left the cellar safely once more.
Next Susanoo fired an arrow named kabuyara out into the great field, and orderd O-kuni-nushi to look for it.
As soon as O-kuni-nushi went into the field, Susanoo set fire to the field from its circumference.
When O-kuni-nushi could not find the way to flee from fire and was at a loss what to do, a rat appeared and said,
' The inside is hollow but the outside is solid. '
So he walked to the centre of the field and fell down a hole.
While he was hiding in the hole, fire burnt the surface of the ground and passed over him.
The rat appeared again with the arrow between its teeth and offered it to him.
The feathers of the arrow had been torn off by the rat's young.
O-kuni-nushi's wife came weeping with implements for the funeral, and her father came to the field and stood there thinking that O-kuni-nushi had died.
But O-kuni-nushi appeared with the arrow and offered it to Susanoo.
He took O-kuni-nushi back again to his palace, called him into a large cellar, and told him to get rid of lice on his head.
A great many centipedes were on his head.
At this time Suseri brought fruit of muku and red earth, and gave them to her husband.
He chewed the fruit, then put the red earth in his mouth and spat them both out.
Susanoo thought O-kuni-nushi had torn the centipedes off with his teeth and spat them out, and so, considering O-kuni-nushi to be of a gentle nature, he fell asleep.
While Susanoo was sleeping O-kuni-nushi grasped his hair and tied it to each of the pillars supporting the roof,
then pushed a large rock to the door of the cellar and blocked it off.
He took his wife up on his back, took Susanoo's treasures the long sword with a magical power, the bow and arrow with a magical power, and the holy koto (the japanese harp) and ran away.
When O-kuni-nushi was fleeing the koto knocked against a tree, producing a loud noise.
Susanoo was awakened by the noise, jumped to his feet, and pulled the pillars down.
While he was untying the hair knotted around the poles, O-kuni-nushi fled.
Susanoo ran after him, saw him in the distance, and said to him in a loud voice,
'Your bastard !! Listen well !! Chase your brothers-in-law to defeat them! Go after them to the drive them away with the sword and the bow and arrow you have taken! O-kuni-nushi, make my daughter Suseri your legitimate wife, and live in the palace with rafters reaching high into the sky!! Son of a bitch !!'
Then O-kuni-nushi did as he was told.
Then Princess Yagami was married to O-kuni-nushi as the white rabbit had foretold.
Though she was taken to Izumo, she became afraid of Suseri, a legal wife of O-kuni-nushi, left her baby at the croth of tree, and went back to Inaba."
I told to her.
"Well, I think O-kuni-nushi was not hero. Because he haven't done special things that much. He was helped by his mother and his girlfrend. Adding his luck, and also he was helped by a mouse too, when he was surrounded by frame. Umm, he was just only a playboy…. Do you think so?"
However she answered to me like this,
" Hey you! I don't think so you said, because O-kuni-nushi was charismatic character. He had good partner in him as always. It is his personality that could have make his suppoters. "
I answered,
"Hum, I see. I am sure and I can say that his personality is suitable for japanese. "
See said,
" Yes, he is the Japanese kami. His calacter is gentle and clever, well, incidentally I told you that O-kuni-nushi was playboy. What do you think about after his marraige to O-kuninushi? "
" I don't know. please tell me the story. I am interested ! "
" Ok! Then O-kuni-nushi went to country of Koshi. Because his purpose was to meet to a beatiful princess. "
I said,
" Legend of playboy again!"
